First Impressions of The Mandalorian On Disney Plus

The new Disney Plus streaming service is finally up and running and one of their first offerings in the way of exclusives is the series The Mandalorian Which is set in the Star Wars universe somewhere between the fall of The Galactic Empire and the rise of The First Order. The show focuses in on a bounty hunter who is hired to track down a bounty that by the looks of it will turn out to be the main plotline of the series. The title character is played by Pedro Pascal who is best known for his roles on Game of Thrones and Narcos.

What is a Mandalorian?

Before we get into the actual show I thought it might be a good idea to learn a bit about the lore and history of what Mandalorians are really all about. Originating from the planet Mandalore they are known for their prowess in battle and are legendary for being some of the only warriors around that can stand toe to toe with a jedi and are feared throughout the galaxy for their mercenary and bounty hunting skills. Mandalore has pretty much been at war for one reason or another their entire history and Mandalorians are known to never remove their helmets, giving a bit of mystery to their already intimidating personas and they typically use advanced technologies mixed with amazing fighting techniques to overcome their enemies. A couple well known Mandalorians in Star Wars lore are Jango and Boba Fett.

So how’s the show?

There has only been one episode already so there is only so much I can gather about the series at this point but what I’ve seen so far is promising and left me wanting to see more. The production quality is great as you’d expect from Disney, it feels like you’re watching a Star Wars movie rather than a TV show and that is certainly a good thing. The makeup and special effects are done very, very well and help to immerse you in the show.

Another thing I really enjoyed about this first episode was that they sprinkled just the right amount of comedic moments in, I was worried they might do it too much and end up going the Jar Jar Binks route but they balanced the comedy with the seriousness perfectly.

The Plot

I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone but the first episode did give a few clues as to where this show might be headed. It feels like we’ll be along for the ride while the title character seeks to find redemption and is sure to evolve as we join hm on this journey. The first episode leaves off in a way that makes me pretty sure our main protagonist is going to have to do a 180 in his beliefs and I’m pretty sure we’ll be watching a man struggle with the lines between who he is ,who he was and who he wants to be.

So far the first episode alone is enough to make me want to subscribe to Disney Plus for a long time to come, there are a limited amount of exclusives at the moment but the whole Disney, Star Wars and Marvel catalog is available to watch at your leisure…For $6.99 a month there really isn’t a better deal out there right now.
