9 Amazing Musicians Who Died Too Soon

Jim Morrison

Born as James Douglas Morrison in Melbourne, Florida in 1943 Jim Morrison was the lead singer of the legendary rock group The Doors. He was known for being a bit bizarre and unpredictable but it was part of why people loved him so much. The Doors formed in 1965 and would go on to create 8 albums in only 5 years before Jim Morrison passed away unexpectedly on July 3, 1971 at the age of 27, the exact cause of death was never discovered. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.

Janis Joplin

Janis Lyn Joplin was born in 1943 in Port Arthur, Texas who was a rock and soul singer, she had a total of 4 albums, one of which was released after her death titled Pearl . she started her rise to stardom in 1967 as the lead singer of the band Big Brother and the Holding Company but after two albums with them she decided to go solo and had even more success. She was one of the many great music acts at the original Woodstock and had 5 singles reach The Billboard Hot 100 including her hit “Me and Bobby McGee” which would reach the number 1 slot. She was known for her overwhelmingly great singing voice and died of an accidental heroin overdose in 1970 at the age of 27(oddly enough just like many other famous musicians).

Freddie Mercury

Born Farrokh Bulsara in 1946, Freddie Mercury was the lead singer of the British rock band Queen and is widely thought to have been one of the best rock and roll singers ever. Freddie Mercury would pass away in 1991 at the age of 45 as a result of complications from AIDS. His music is just as big today as it was back then and since the 2018 bipoc Bohemian Rhapsody his popularity has only gone up. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001 as part of Queen.

John Lennon

The man I personally consider the heart and soul of The Beatles John Lennon was born in 1940 in Liverpool, England and would go on to help form perhaps the most famous rock and roll band ever. He was very outspoken about being totally against war and would include these beliefs in his music more and more through his career. On top of his success with The Beatles he also went on to have a successful solo career until his death on December 8, 1980 when he was gunned down by Mark David Chapman in front of his Manhattan apartment. Lennon was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, once with The Beatles and once on his own.

Kurt Cobain

In the early 90’s Grunge rock would take the music industry by storm and the band Nirvana were one of the ones leading the charge but it was their lead singer Kurt Cobain that would change the music industry forever. Born in 1967 in Seattle , Washington. Kurt Cobain would become one of the most influential musicians to come along in decades helping to put rock and roll back in the mainstream and all over the billboard charts. Kurt would die from a self inflicted gunshot wound on April 5, 1994 at the age of 27 (The third one on this list)

Bradley Nowell

Although the band Sublime is still around they no longer have the original lead singer Bradley Nowell who in my opinion was the heart and soul of the band and the one that brought us all the songs we love from this band from santeria to what I got they’re the song me and my friends would sing along to in high school. Bradley Nowell was born in 1968 in Long Beach, California and fronted the Ska/Punk/Reggae band Sublime . Sadly he fought an addiction to heroin most of his life and he finally lost that battle on May 25, 1996 at the age of 28.

Jimi Hendrix

Born Johnny Allen Hendrix in 1942 in Seattle, Washington Jimi Hendrix is considered by many to be the greatest guitarist who ever lived. He started playing guitar at the age of 15 and he learned to play a little bit differently from most as he was left handed yet used a right handed guitar and he would just restring it differently to suit his needs. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 as a member of The Jimi Hendrix Experience. He would die from Barbiturate related asphyxia on September 18, 1970 at the age of 27 (yup that’s the fourth one on this list that died at 27)

Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse was an English singer who was born on September 14, 1983 and she also happens to be my favorite female vocalist of all time. She would go on to win countless awards but sadly was better known for her substance abuse problems and she died from alcohol poisoning on July 23, 2011 at, you guessed it, the age of 27.
