Until Dawn An Honest And Overdue Review

I know, I know, I’m a bit late to the party with this one but I haven’t had a whole lot of time to game lately as my son is on summer vacation and I’m either outside with him or we’re inside and I let him have the PS4, so I decided I’d go back through my library of free games and just pick one I haven’t played yet.

The first thing I’ll say about Until Dawn is that it looks amazing, the characters are rendered ridiculously well and overall the game world looks pretty nice. The game reminds me a bit of those old “choose your own adventure” books but in video game format, a little bit like the Telltale games except your decisions actually carry a lot of weight in Until Dawn, In the Telltale games most decisions don’t really affect the outcome of the story so much in Until Dawn your choices can mean the difference between life and death for you. The butterfly effect feature is really interesting and makes you really think on your choices.

Featuring some great talent voicing the characters such as Rami Malek, Hayden Panetierre and Peter Stormare and the do the best acting you could in a 2015 video game, you can could only render so much emotion at the time but it’s done very well for the time. These actors help you to become attached to and sympathize with their characters and really helped to bring the game together.

One of the few problems I had with the game was the controls felt a bit clumsy, the quick time events worked well enough but walking around the game world wasn’t always as slick as it should have been, it’s a minor complaint though seeing the majority of the game is QTEs and choices being made. another thing that i noticed that isn’t so much a complaint but I just found it odd is that the actual gameplay parts of the game seemed better rendered than the cutscenes…perhaps the only game I’ve ever seen that in, I played it on PS4 so can’t speak for other platforms.

Overall the game was a good time and didn’t take a huge commitment of my time to play through plus once you beat it you can go back to any episode and make different choices to see how things would have gone.

Overall I give the game a 7 out of 10 and recommend checking it out if it’s on sale.

What are your thoughts? have you played it yet?

Did you like the game?
