If you haven’t heard the news yet Kanye West is running for president and he held his first campaign rally in North Charleston, South Carolina yesterday and although there are lots of things to talk about in regards to his rally, the thing that is catching everyone’s attention are the comments he made about Harriet Tubman, claiming that she never actually helped free the slaves.
As you can imagine Twitter blew up over these comments and people had lots to say about it, let’s take a look at some of the reactions.
Kanye West said Harriet Tubman “never actually freed the slaves” during a campaign rally in South Carolina.

Tubman escaped slavery herself and helped enslaved Black men and women travel north to freedom. https://t.co/xFeHKSZtrx pic.twitter.com/Rt64anNsT9
You can’t just change historical facts to fit your campaign’s narrative.
Kanye West drew shouts of opposition from the South Carolina crowd gathered for a campaign event when he said Harriet Tubman “never actually freed the slaves, she just had them work for other white people.” https://t.co/bPz1B6Uarz

You could hear shouts of disappointment in the crowd right after he said it.
Kanye said this and I left immediately. I went for a laugh and I got one. But when it got disrespectful for me it was over. pic.twitter.com/nNqjUp03mu

Here’s the statement from the point of view of a voter that was there out of curiosity and a desire for a good laugh.
Harriet Tubman made 19 trips along the Underground Railroad to free over 300 enslaved people between 1850-1860. She once had a $40,000 ($1.2 million in 2020) bounty on her head. She carried a pistol on her for protection from slave catchers and slaves who wanted to turn back. pic.twitter.com/YLcHZDJAaj

Disgracing the memory of one of our nation’s greatest heroes is not the way to get our votes…
Kanye adds: The Harriet Tubman thing is…I’m sick of this Black iconography being used by white people for us to look up to and say this is us https://t.co/Aa1R6DTLwD

Because it is racist to assume black people will overwhelmingly vote for Kanye…let’s give people more credit than that, come on.
Slavery isn’t over is his point. The current system puts a cap on how much power black people can have. No matter how much we achieve.

Granted those are all valid points to make but maybe leave national heroes out of it next time you want to make that point.
I’ve been watching Kanye’s campaign rally for 5 minutes. So far he’s said:
— Linz DeFranco (@LinzDeFranco) July 19, 2020
-He had a Percocet addiction after plastic surgery.
-He will walk away from Adidas and Gap deals if they don’t put him on the board.
-Made an “I’mma let you finish” joke.
-Said to stop watching porn.
But the Harriet Tubman statement wasn’t the only one he made that caught people’s attention.
Kanye West says abortion should be legal but adds that every person who has a baby should receive $1 million.

As nice as $1 million would be I think this might promote people having way more kids than they should or encourage people that shouldn’t have kids or don’t want kids to have them.
UPDATE | Kanye West revealed during a South Carolina rally that he urged Kim Kardashian to have an abortion when she was pregnant with their first child. https://t.co/M7c6WOgReJ
