16 Amazing Stand-Up Comedians

There’s nothing quite as fun as sitting down with your significant other or friends and family and watching a good stand-up act but with so many comedians out there it can be easy to miss out on some of the amazing ones. This is by no means a definitive list, just some of my personal favorites and legends that have left a huge impact on the comedy world to this day.

George Carlin

George Denis Patrick Carlin was born on May 12, 1937 in New York City and would have a very long successful career. In my personal opinion he is not only the best comedian of all time, he is the most important one. More like a philosopher or prophet than a comedian he would often leave you thinking and thinking after hearing his views on everything from politics to religion. George Carlin has had 14 HBO specials, has appeared on countless talk shows over the decades and hosted the first ever episode of Saturday Night Live in 1975. Carlin passed away on June 22, 2008 of cardiac arrest but left a lasting mark and will always be the best in my book.

Richard Pryor

Richard Franklin Lennox Thomas Pryor was born on December 1, 1940 in Peoria, Illinois. He would become known for his highly offensive yet highly intelligent humor, touching on subjects such as racism and politics. Comedy Central gave him the number 1 spot on their all time greatest stand-up comedians list and in 2017 Rolling Stone listed him as number 1 on their list of the 50 best stand-up comics of all time. Pryor passed away in 2005 at the age of 65 from a heart attack.

Edward Regan Murphy was born on April 3, 1961 in Brooklyn, New York and would go on to find huge success as a stand-up comedian. He would be a regular cast member on SNL in the early 80’s and comedy specials such as RAW made him a household name by the time the 90’s rolled around and he would also star in countless movies including 48 hours, Beverly Hills Cop and The Nutty Professor. If you’ve ever seen him play Buckwheat from The Little Rascals on SNL then you know why he’s on this list, regardless of some troubles he’s had in years past the man is a comedy genius.

Sam Kinison

Samuel Burl Kinison was born on December 8, 1953 in Yakima, Washington and would eventually become a comedy legend. One thing not a lot of people realize about Sam Kinison was that he was a Pentecostal Preacher before he was a comedian and he brought some of that preaching type intensity into his comedy and made it his brand. He was loud and intense and screamed a lot and people loved him for it. Kinison would pass away in 1992 due to a vehicular accident but would leave behind a lasting legacy.

Sarah Kate Silverman was born on December 1, 1970 in Bedford, New Hampshire. Known for her comedy focusing on taboo and controversial topics. she’s probably my favorite female comedian as of right now, she did the voice for the little girl in Wreck It Ralph and it’s one of the movies me and my son watch together most. Apart from her awesome stand-up act she was also a writer and performer on SNL and starred in her own series The Sarah Silverman Show, which ran for 3 years. Dave Chappelle

David Khari Webber Chappelle was born on August 24, 1973 in Washington D.C. and would end up taking the comedy world by storm at a young age. I feel like although his stand-up was great all along that it was the movie Half-Baked that really put Dave Chappelle on the map. He would go on to star in his own comedy series Chappelle’s Show which was wildly successful and put him at the very top of the comedy industry. He took a break after his show ended but has returned with a vengeance and is back on top with two new recent Netflix specials.

Steven Wright

Steven Alexander Wright was born on December 6, 1955 in Cambridge, Massachusetts and is not known anywhere near as much as he should be. His unique deadpan delivery has a certain perfection about it and I could literally listen to him tell jokes for hours on end and be entertained. He was ranked the 15th best comedian of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.

Tragically he would die from a drug overdose in 2005 cutting short what certainly would have been a brilliant career.
