10 Great Free-to-Play PS4 Video Games

Neverwinter

Neverwinter is a free-to-play MMORPG or massively multiplayer online role playing game set in the world of Dungeons & Dragons within the Forgotten Realms campaign setting. It is developed by Cryptic Studios and published by Perfect World Entertainment. It has a very in depth character customization allowing for a large variety of different builds and playstyles. The player base isn’t as large as it once was back in 2016 but is a healthy number and it’s still worth a try if you haven’t played it yet. There are microtransactions of course like most free games and here is even a good amount of pay 2 win elements to the game but you can play the entire game and be just as good as anyone else without spending a cent.

Apex Legends

Apex Legends is a First Person Shooter Battle Royale game, 20 teams of 3 battle it out to be the last team standing. It pretty much came out of nowhere and took the gaming and streaming world by storm, it’s hype has died out a bit but with the 3rd battle pass just released along with a new map , it’s a great time to either pick the game up or get back into it. With 11 characters to choose from each with their own unique abilities you can choose whatever play style you enjoy best. There are microtransactions but they are for purely cosmetic items.

Gwent : The Witcher Card Game

The Witcher games contained a fun little activity you could take place in to take a break from all the questing and what not and they took that card game Gwent and made it into it’s own game. It follows most of the usual card game rules but is just different enough to be it’s own thing. The 3 rows part of the game is what sets it apart from others , only allowing you to use certain cards in certain rows or having different effects according to what row you put them in. For anyone into trading card games this one’s certainly worth a try.

Fallout Shelter

Although it seems more like a game you’d play on a tablet or phone Fallout Shelter can be lots of fun. It’s a side scrolling resource management game set in the Fallout universe. It’s available on all platforms and although it’s free-to-play it does have many microtransactions and the game has grossed over $100 million to date. Become the overseer of your very own vault, a great little time waster for sure.

Smite

Smite is a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena game or MOBA where you take on the role of a god, immortal or a creature from ancient mythology and battle for supremacy. It is mostly played in a 5v5 format but does have numerous game modes with different rules. There are 105 different playable characters, giving you near endless variety and replayability. It has a large player base and doesn’t seem like it’ll be going anywhere anytime soon.

Warframe

This game could easily be mistaken for a triple A title and for a free game is amazing. It is a team based third person shooter and is similar to other games in the genre and is set in the distant future giving you use of pretty cool weapons and tech. If you’re looking for a break from your usual games and haven’t play Warframe yet , it’s certainly a great option.

Crossout

Very Reminiscent of Twisted Metal this vehicular battle game has almost endless customization options , allowing you to build your vehicle from scratch piece by piece. The controls were kind of clunky when it first came out but they have made a ton of improvements in the game and it is much more enjoyable now.

Paladins

This team based shooter is a lot like Overwatch but without all the cheaters and hackers. It’s just good fun and easier to pick up and learn than a lot of games these days. There are currently 42 different characters to choose from and although you have to purchase some of them the ones you can use free rotate occasionally giving you chances to use everyone without putting money into the game. It has a good sized player base and it’s easy to find a match anytime you want to play.

H1Z1: Battle Royale

Like the name says this is another Battle Royale game except this time in third person. It is kind of like a watered down version of PUBG but I actually enjoy H1Z1 a lot more, simplifying the game allows the player to focus on gun battles rather than attachments and loot all the time. I can’t even tell you the amount of hours I spent on this game with my buddies but I can tell you it’s most likely way too much.

Fortnite

Everyone knows this game but I had to include it regardless because it is a global phenomena and a powerhouse in the gaming world and is part of why so many games are starting to use the free-to-play business model. The king of the battle royale games for sure and certainly a favorite of the younger gamers right now.
